Mobilegeddon 2016

robert mapes realtor wordpress websitesSure. If you cry “wolf!” enough, then people are going to eventually ignore you. And a lot of us sorta think this is what happens with Google. They make announcements, but then we never see the results. (But let’s not forget the Panda update, where almost all of us were affected…)

Many believe these Mobilegeddon announcements from Google are just smoke. After all, practically nothing happened last year when Google announced how the fact that if your website was not Mobile-Friendly then you would lose your ranking on mobile devices.

Well, that didn’t happen. At least not to the majority of sites.

But this time, May 2016, it might just be time to take Google seriously about their Mobile-Friendly announcement.

After all, Google is the BIG DOG when it comes to searches. And let’s face it, practically no one keys in a URL anymore. Instead, they just “google” (lower-case, since it has become a verb by default) the topic that they want. And we know that approximately two-thirds of Google searches are done from a mobile device (and most of those are done from a smart phone.) So, whether you believe this mobilegeddon talk or not, perhaps you should not take the chance. I mean, what if, all of a sudden, you lost 66% of your audience simply because your website is not Mobile-Friendly? I don’t know about you and your business, but this would be devastating to most businesses.

So, let’s play it safe. Get your website into a Mobile-Friendly state. And do it NOW!

Don’t know if your site is Mobile-Friendly? That’s OK. Here is a link where you can simply put in your website URL and let Google will tell you if it is Mobile-Friendly. Google Mobile-Friendly Test

Listen, I build websites. I normally use WordPress and I always use something called Responsive Templates (or Themes.) Responsive simply means that the code is built in so that the website will work on a desktop, tablet, or even a phone. Google loves it. If you need some help with your website, contact me. I will be happy to help you. Just pick up the phone and call. 972-679-7063

LinkedIn Tip

Rob Mapes

We live in a very competitive world. And if you are like me, you don’t necessarily want to help your potential customers find your competition.

If you use LinkedIn, and you keep your default settings, that is exactly what you are doing. You are giving your potential clients a window into businesses just like you.

Have you noticed, when you look at someone’s profile on LinkedIn, you can normally see a section entitled “People Also Viewed”? These are usually the competitors of the person you are viewing.

Just think. When people find you on Linked In, they see the same thing. In the right column, they see a list of Linked In members who are probably very similar to you.

There is a way to hide this information. Granted, there are not a lot of people in this list, but why hand your potential customers avenues to others.

If you want to remove these people from your profile page, simply click here to learn how to change your settings.

Listen Closely! Social Media Marketing means Building Communities!

Build your community with Robert MapesSocial Media Marketing is STILL a new concept for a LOT of people. I’m not really sure why that is… but I am hoping that it is because they are so focused on their own specific businesses and selling a lot of product that they just don’t have the time to raise their heads above the din and look around.

So let’s make it really, really simple. If you are going to have ANY customers TOMORROW, then you MUST learn the new way to reach and engage your customers TODAY. Advertising has been changing, and not so subtly. Of course, if you think MADMEN is the video textbook of current marketing, then you need to stop what you are doing and contact me immediately.

Customers have learned that THEY ARE IN CHARGE. And companies are beginning to learn this new law of the land. At least for the most part. Apple still seems to think that they always know best and that the customer had better be darn glad that Apple can give it to them, even at an inflated price. Now, don’t get me wrong and start sending me nasty comments. I like Apple products. I really do. In fact, I’m getting ready to purchase a new iMac, or maybe a MacBook Pro, I haven’t made up my mind yet. Its just that I hate paying so much for the hardware.

Companies today, those that understand, are learning how to engage and interact with their customers so that the customers keep walking back through that front door, regardless if it is digital or not. And one of the ways that these companies are reaching their customers is through Social Media.

If you are the owner or manager of a company, then you need to start building your own little community of customers and potential buyers. You need to provide them with content that can help them enrich their lives. It doesn’t matter if it is a stick of gum, instructions about how to prepare an award-winning casserole, or the latest news about underwater photography, you just need to understand your customer and find a way to connect and to show them that you have value.

In some future posts, I will give you specific examples of how I have taught some of my clients to build what Seth Godin calls a “tribe”.
